Kuopio is the capital of North Savonia and the biggest city of the Finnish Lakeland, built on a peninsula in Lake Kallavesi with water on three sides. It is a working city with a compact wooden-house old centre, a market hall, a hilltop tower and a sauna culture, not a resort. Most travellers use it as a 1–2 night stop between Helsinki and the northern lakes, or as a summer base for boat trips and lake beaches.
