Go only if you want a rural Okayama base: one night, a car or bicycle, and a homestay or the Jibutei resort centre. Otherwise skip it and stay in Tsuyama.
Kumenan is a small farming town in Okayama Prefecture, about 40 minutes by JR Tsuyama Line from Okayama and 20 minutes from Tsuyama. It has one well-known temple, a hilltop park, a library and culture centre, and a slow rural pace. There are no bars, few English speakers and no big hotels, so it works as a quiet one-night stop or a half-day detour, not a multi-day base.

Get around
The JR Tsuyama Line stops at Koume, Yuge and Tanjoji, roughly once an hour. The town is spread out, so a car or a bicycle is the practical way to reach Tanjoji Temple and Senryu Park; taxis are available but limited.

Scams and watch-outs
- Trains run about once an hour: check the last departure before you go out.
- Senryu Park is reached by a long, steep flight of stone steps through forest; wear grippy shoes and watch for snakes in summer.
- Few people speak English; have addresses written in Japanese.
- Most shops on the Shimoyuge main street look closed even in the afternoon; owners are often behind the storefront.
Kumenan is a quiet, low-crime rural town; the real risks are the steep, snake-prone steps at Senryu Park, summer heat, and infrequent trains that leave you stranded after the last departure.
