Two nights if you hike a Kumano Kodo section and see Onigajo; one night if you only want the coast rocks and Shishiiwa.
Kumano is a small coastal city in southern Mie, on the JR Kisei line between Nagoya and Shingu. It is known for the Kodo pilgrimage trails, the Onigajo rock caves and Shishiiwa, and the August 17 fireworks. A car makes the spread-out sights much easier; trains and a few buses cover the coast.

Get around
The JR Kisei line links Kumanoshi, Odomari and Atashika along the coast; a few local buses serve the rest. Sights inland (Maruyama Senmaida, Doro Gorge, Kiwa) are far apart, so a rental car saves hours. Check bus and train times the day before.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains and buses are infrequent: check the last connection before you set out.
- Beaches have no lifeguards; the sea can be rough.
- Aug 17 fireworks: trains and roads fill up; reserve limited express seats about two weeks ahead.
- Some cafés and bars keep short or weekend-only hours: check before you go.
Kumano is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are infrequent transport, unguarded beaches and rough seas. Keep cash for small shops and farm stands.
