Give Kumamoto 2 nights: one full day for the castle and Suizenji garden, one for Mount Aso or a day trip. Skip it only if you are already skipping Kyushu.
Kumamoto is the capital of Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu and a major stop on the Kyushu Shinkansen, 40–50 min from Fukuoka and 50–60 min from Kagoshima. Its headline sight is Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's largest, damaged in the 2016 and 2026 earthquakes and partly reopened. The city is compact, tram-served and cheap to move around, and it works as a base for Mount Aso, Amakusa and the Yatsushiro and Hitoyoshi valleys.

Get around
Two tram lines (¥150 a ride) meet downtown and cover the station, the castle side and Kengun; city day passes work on trams and buses. Buses run from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal. Driving in the centre is not recommended: narrow roads, jams and expensive parking.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Parts of Kumamoto Castle and its grounds are still closed for earthquake rebuilding: check the official site before you go.
- June and early July bring very heavy rain; landslides and transport closures are possible in the Aso area.
- Some downtown bars have no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
- English signage is limited on rural buses and the Shimabara ferry route.
Kumamoto is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are summer heat, heavy rain in June–July, and the castle's earthquake closures. Standard Japan advice applies: no tipping, cash for small places, 110 police and 119 fire or ambulance.
