Kulmbach
Give Kulmbach one full day plus one night: Plassenburg in the morning, the old town and a Kommunbräu beer in the afternoon, then move on.
Kulmbach is a small Upper Franconian town of about 26,000 people between Bamberg and Hof, known for beer and for Plassenburg, the castle above the roofs. The station sits on a regional line only, so it works as a stop on a Bamberg–Hof run rather than a base. One night covers the castle, the old town and the breweries; the Bierfest in late July and early August is the one time beds get tight.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk, and station to Marktplatz is a short walk (check the exact time on arrival). The climb to Plassenburg is uphill and takes a while (check). Local buses cover the outer districts but run thinly in the evening (check timetables). A car helps for the steam locomotive museum at Neuenmarkt and for the surrounding hills.
See and do
Known for
- Plassenburg castle and its pewter figurine museum
- Kulmbacher beer, including Eisbock

- Old town around the Marktplatz
- Walk to the market, the pubs and the castle path; the most useful base for one night. Check availability and rates before booking.
- Near Kulmbach station
- An option to check if you want an early train out; confirm the walk or taxi to the old town yourself.
- Mainleus and the villages west
- Village guesthouses a few kilometres out — check current listings and rates; only worth it if you have a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- The rail line through Kulmbach is not electrified and sees regional trains only: no ICE, and connections usually mean a change in Bamberg or Hof.
- Plassenburg opens Monday–Friday 09:00–18:00 and Saturday 10:00–13:00 from April to October, and Monday–Friday 10:00–17:00 from November to March; check before you climb.
- Bierfest (last Saturday in July into the first weekend of August) fills the town: book a bed weeks ahead or sleep in Bamberg.
- Many kitchens close between lunch and dinner, and small places shut one weekday: check the door.
Kulmbach is a quiet, low-risk town. The usual small-town cautions apply: the climb to the castle is uphill and unlit in places after dark (check), old-town paving is uneven, and Eisbock at 9% is stronger than it tastes.
