Kuching

Pick Kuching for a slower Sarawak base: two nights for the waterfront and food, plus day trips to Bako National Park or the Semenggoh orangutan centre.

Kuching is the capital of Sarawak on Borneo, laid out along a bend of the Sarawak River and still shaped by the 19th-century Brooke "White Rajah" dynasty that ruled the state as a private kingdom. The old waterfront, Main Bazaar shophouses and Chinese temples are walkable in an afternoon; the reason to base here longer is what lies outside town — proboscis monkeys and rainforest trails at Bako National Park, semi-wild orangutans at Semenggoh, and longhouse visits into the interior.

  • Bako's boat transfer and trails can close on short notice after heavy rain: have a backup day in mind.
  • River water levels and jetty locations shift with the tide: confirm the current departure point for Bako boats.
