Kūaotunu
Give Kūaotunu 1–2 nights as a quiet beach base on the Coromandel loop, not a day trip: 20 min from Whitianga, 30 min from Coromandel town.
Kūaotunu is a small east-coast settlement on the Coromandel Peninsula, about 231 people, built around one long surf beach and a handful of roads. There is no town centre to tour: you come for the sand, the campground, one pizza place and the walk to New Chums Beach. It suits a 1–2 night stop inside a Coromandel road trip, and it is quiet enough that a car is effectively mandatory.

A car is the practical way to move here: the beach, Otama Beach and the New Chums trailhead are 3.5–22 km (2.2–14 mi) apart with no useful bus service. Roads from Whitianga (about 20 min) and Coromandel town (about 30 min) are sealed; the road beyond Otama toward Opito Bay is unsealed in parts. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- No supermarket or pharmacy in the settlement: buy food and fuel in Whitianga or Coromandel town first.
- Cell coverage and card payment can be patchy; carry some cash.
- The New Chums Beach track crosses a stream and can be wet at high tide; wear shoes you can soak.
- Surf and rips on the open beach: swim between the flags or stay in the shallows.
- Summer holiday weeks book out months ahead; outside that, some cafés and the campground run shorter hours.
Very low crime; the real risks are the sea (rips and surf), unsealed and winding peninsula roads, and having no supplies within walking distance. Tell someone your plan before walking the New Chums track.
