Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is an air-conditioned city with a hot street on top: do the towers and the heritage core before 11:00, go indoors from 14:00 when the storm comes, and eat on Jalan Alor or in Chinatown after 18:00.

The sights are clustered around four rail stations, but the walks between them are hot, wet and partly on broken pavement. The trips that go wrong are the ones that walk between clusters in the afternoon, queue for a timed tower slot without a booking, or land at KLIA at 21:00 with no plan for the 55 km ride. Four clusters cover a first visit; Batu Caves and Putrajaya are trips away from one kept bed.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL, KLIA Terminal 1)
KLIA to the centre: one ride-hailing car or coupon taxi to the door, 55–90 minutes for 55 km, or the KLIA Ekspres train in 28 minutes to KL Sentral — the risk is the immigration queue and a late landing, not the ride.

Get around

LRT and MRT between clusters; walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car late at night and for the airport.

Passes
No pass needed. Single fares are small; a rechargeable card avoids queues at ticket machines.
Late at night
Rail stops around midnight (check the last train on your line); ride-hailing runs all night and prices rise after storms.

    Book a timed slot on the official site for the first hour after opening; allow 75 minutes, bags are searched, and go from the mall side.

Walk-in street food from about 18:00: grilled meats, noodles and seafood at plastic tables; check prices, choose a busy stall, and expect to sit in the open air.

Sleep

Bukit Bintang
First-timers: rail, malls and food at the door, but pick a hotel a few blocks off the main junction and ask about the late arrival protocol.
Chinatown & Pasar Seni
Cheaper beds next to the Pasar Seni rail hub; hotels are smaller, and streets are busy and hot; ask about night access before you book.

Language

Malay is the national language, written in Latin script; English is the second language of business and widely spoken. Chinese Malaysians speak Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka and Mandarin; Indian Malaysians speak Tamil. In Sabah and Sarawak indigenous languages add more.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Light handshake or hand on heart; wait for women to offer a hand; avoid: Firm grips, hugging
  • Pointing: Use the thumb with fingers folded; avoid: Index finger pointing
  • Homes: Shoes off; avoid: Walking in with shoes
  • Mosques: Covered clothes, headscarf for women; avoid: Entering during prayers
  • Public affection: Keep it low-key; avoid: Kissing in public

Red lines

  • Mosques and temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off, keep voices low.
  • Do not photograph worshippers at prayer without asking.
  • Do not carry parcels for strangers at the airport or the station.

  • Fake MDAC sites: The MDAC is free on imigresen-online.imi.gov.my.
  • Taxi without a meter: Use Grab or insist on the meter.
  • Snatch theft: Bag on the wall side, phone in pocket near the road.
  • Card game / gambling friends: Friendly strangers inviting you home to 'play cards' run a rigged game.
  • Fake e-visa agents: Use malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my only.
