Kruševo sits at about 1,350 m, among the highest towns in the Balkans, and is where the Ilinden Uprising proclaimed a republic in August 1903 that lasted ten days. It is a small town of roughly 5,500 people, the centre of the Aromanian (Vlach) minority, with a preserved 19th-century layout, several museums and a ski lift above the rooftops. The road up is steep and slow, so it works as an overnight stop between Prilep and Bitola, not a rushed day trip.

Get around
The town is small and walkable, but every route is up or down: bring shoes with grip. Toše Proeski Street is the main road through town. A car makes the monuments and the monastery easier; otherwise use taxis for the Vršnik cross and Mečkin Kamen.
