Go as a half-day or one-night trip from Saint Petersburg, not as a base: the Naval Cathedral and the sea-gauge take 3–4 h on foot.
Kronstadt is a 44,000-person naval town on Kotlin Island, 35 km west of Saint Petersburg and now reachable by the Ring Road dam. Until 1998 it was a closed city, so its centre is a compact run of early-19th-century naval buildings around one huge cathedral. Most travellers see it in half a day; the forts in the gulf need a boat and a booked tour.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable: Anchor Square to the sea-gauge is about 20 min on foot. Local buses (routes with the letters KR) run between the Leningrad pier, the centre and the western districts; fares are low, pay in cash or by card on board (check). Taxis are cheap for the fort end of town.

Scams and watch-outs
- The military harbour and military-unit land are closed; do not photograph naval ships or gates.
- The gulf forts (Kronshlot, Alexander I) are on islands with no regular public boat: go only with an organised tour.
- Winter ice and wind off the gulf make the waterfront unpleasant from December to April.
- Carry your passport; this is a border-zone naval town and checks happen.
- Card payments can fail for foreign-issued cards in Russia: carry rubles.
A quiet, low-crime naval town; the real risks are closed military zones, winter ice on the waterfront and the lack of English signage or help outside the centre.
