Kırklareli
One night, and only if you are driving Eastern Thrace: a compact market town with a good regional museum, no rail, and 3 h 30 min buses from Istanbul.
Kırklareli is the provincial capital of the Istranca foothills, 60 km from the Bulgarian border, and it works as a practical overnight on the E87 between Istanbul and Edirne rather than a destination in itself. The centre is walkable in an afternoon: a regional museum, a 1383 mosque, Ottoman fountains, a bedestan and a replica of Atatürk's Thessaloniki birthplace. The town lost its railway in 1992, so you arrive by bus or car. Food, hotels and a Migros are all within a few hundred metres of the bus station.

Get around
The centre is flat and compact: museum, mosque, bedestan, fountains and Atatürk House all sit within about 800 m of each other, so walk. You need a car for the dam picnic area, Dupnisa Cave and the villages. Local minibuses run to nearby villages but timetables are thin; check at the bus station. Taxis are metered and short hops in town are cheap.
