Kristiansund
Give Kristiansund one full day plus a night: the Sundbåt harbour ferry, Innlandet's old lanes and a Grip boat trip if it is summer. Two nights if you add the Atlantic Road.
Kristiansund is a small fishing and opera town built across four main islands on the mid-western coast, in Møre og Romsdal. Most of it was rebuilt after 1940 bombing, so the appeal is the harbour, the surviving Innlandet quarter and the world's oldest running public ferry line, not a checklist of monuments. It works as a one-night stop on the Hurtigruten or coastal route, or as a base for the Atlantic Road and Grip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names; avoid: Small talk that is too personal
- Nature: Greet other hikers, close gates, carry litter out; avoid: Loud music on trails
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or chocolates; 'takk for maten' after the meal; avoid: Arriving late
- Conversation: Modest, factual, humorous; avoid: Showing off wealth — Norwegians are rich but understated
- 17 May: Dress up, join the crowds, wave a flag; avoid: Treating the parades as a tourist show
- Queues: Take a number; avoid: Pushing in
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not confuse Kristiansund with Kristiansand in the south, or Kristianstad in Sweden: check the airport code and the spelling before you book.
- Grip has no fresh water and no permanent residents; bring what you need and take everything back.
- The Grip boat runs in summer only, and the crossing is weather-dependent — confirm the day before.
- Many bars and clubs check ID and set a 20-year minimum even though the legal drinking age is 18; carry a passport or EU-style ID.
- Winter days are short and the coastal wind is strong: plan indoor sights and check boat and road status.
Kristiansund is a safe small city; the real risks are coastal weather, wet quays and dark winter roads. Watch for slippery piers and always check boat and road status before a coastal trip.
