Kouvola
Give Kouvola one night as a rail stop, or a full day for Verla mill and Repovesi park; the centre itself is a 2-hour walk.
Kouvola is Finland's busiest inland rail junction, 1.5–2 hours from Helsinki, and most travellers pass through it on the way north or east. The reason to stop is outside the centre: the Verla groundwood mill, a UNESCO site 30 km north, and Repovesi National Park. The town itself is small, walkable and cheap, with a pedestrian main street and a handful of bars.

Get around
Walk the centre: Manski is pedestrian and everything central is within about 15 minutes. Local buses run on the Waltti system; a single 2-hour ticket is €2.90 in the app or €3.60 from the driver (card only in the app, cash from the driver). Bike share (Donkey Republic) covers short hops. Taxis and the train station handle everything else.

- Local bus tickets bought from the driver were cash-only as of 2025: carry some euros or use the app.
