Kotkapura
Skip Kotkapura unless you have a specific reason to visit the cotton market or try the local dishes: a half-day stop is enough, and the town has no major sights that justify a detour.
Kotkapura is a small agricultural city in Punjab's Malwa region, once known for Asia's largest cotton market. Today it offers a historic fort, a gurudwara linked to Guru Gobind Singh, and two local dishes — Dhodha Sweet and Atta Chicken — that are exported beyond India. Most travellers pass through on the way to Faridkot, Bathinda or Ludhiana.

Scams and watch-outs
- The cotton market is seasonal: active Oct–Dec; outside that, little to see.
- Atta Chicken is a heavy dish (bone-in chicken cooked in wheat flour gravy); not for everyone.
- Last buses to nearby towns leave by 20:00; check return times if day-tripping.
Kotkapura is safe for tourists by Indian standards. The main risks are traffic on the main roads and heatstroke in summer. Keep valuables out of sight in crowded markets.
