Köthen

Give Köthen half a day: castle, Bach's court church and the old towers, then move on. Sleep here only if you want a quiet base between Halle and Dessau.

Köthen is a small Saxony-Anhalt town that was the residence of the princes of Anhalt-Köthen and, from 1717 to 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach's workplace as court Kapellmeister. The Brandenburg Concertos and much of The Well-Tempered Clavier were written here. The sights fit in a few hours; the town works best as a stop on the Halle–Magdeburg–Dessau rail line rather than a destination in itself.

Get around

The centre is flat and walkable: Marktplatz to Schloss Köthen is about 5 minutes on foot. Regional trains and the S-Bahn reach Halle, Magdeburg, Dessau and Leipzig; local buses cover the edges. A car helps only for the surrounding villages.
