Kota Kinabalu

Use Kota Kinabalu as the gateway for Mount Kinabalu and the Tunku Abdul Rahman islands: one or two nights in town, more if you are climbing.

Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah state on Borneo's northwest coast, a working port city rebuilt after near-total destruction in the Second World War, so it has little colonial-era fabric left. Visitors use it as a launch point rather than a destination in itself: Kinabalu Park and the 4,095 m summit trek two to three hours inland, five small islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park a short boat ride offshore, and onward flights to Sandakan for orangutans and river wildlife.

Get around

The centre is walkable in a couple of hours; Grab and metered taxis cover the rest. Boats to Tunku Abdul Rahman islands leave from Jesselton Point jetty, and shared vans or private cars reach Kinabalu Park in about two hours.

Malay is the national language, written in Latin script; English is the second language of business and widely spoken. Chinese Malaysians speak Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka and Mandarin; Indian Malaysians speak Tamil. In Sabah and Sarawak indigenous languages add more.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Mount Kinabalu summit climbs require a permit and a licensed guide booked well ahead through Sabah Parks — walk-up slots are rare in high season.
  • Island boats can be cancelled or cut short in rough weather without much notice: build in a buffer day if the trip matters.
  • Sun exposure on open boats and at the summit is intense: sunscreen and a hat matter more here than shade-seeking in town.
  • Check Sabah's own entry and permit rules before travel, since some requirements differ slightly from peninsular Malaysia.
