Kota Bharu is the capital of Kelantan and the most socially conservative city most visitors will meet in Malaysia: cinemas are banned, the call to prayer carries across the centre five times a day, and many shops close briefly at prayer times. It is a museum-and-market city, not a resort. Most travellers pass through on the way to the Perhentian islands; the ones who stay a day get batik, Kelantanese food and a distinct Thai-influenced culture.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: museums, the central market and the night market sit within about 15 minutes of each other. BAS.MY runs local bus routes to the suburbs and nearby towns; taxis and ride-hailing cover the airport and Tumpat. Buses to the Perhentian jetty and other states leave from the central and Langgar terminals — ask which one your bus uses when you buy the ticket.
