Königswinter
Come for one day from Bonn or Cologne: Drachenfels and Schloss Drachenburg, then leave. Sleep here only if you want the Siebengebirge trails at dawn.
Königswinter sits on the right bank of the Rhine between Bonn and Bad Honnef, at the foot of the Siebengebirge. The draw is a single hill: the Drachenfels summit, the cog railway up it and Schloss Drachenburg halfway. The town itself is a main street, a station and a riverbank, so most visitors treat it as a half-day or full-day trip out of Bonn, 30 minutes away by tram.

Get around
The centre is walkable. Tram 66 links Königswinter with Bonn and Bad Honnef; the right-bank regional trains stop at Königswinter station but many Cologne–Koblenz trains run on the left bank via Bonn Hbf and Remagen and will not stop here. Bus 520 goes up to the Margarethenhöhe trailhead, bus 521 to Oberdollendorf and Heisterbach (routes and frequencies check). The Drachenfelsbahn cog railway runs from its lower station near the centre up to the Drachenfels (lower-station location and season check).

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Check which bank your train uses: services via Bonn Hbf and Remagen skip Königswinter.
- The Drachenfelsbahn and Schloss Drachenburg have separate tickets and separate closing times; buy both before you start up.
- Trails in the Siebengebirge are steep and slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
- Parking at the Margarethenhöhe fills on summer weekends and is paid.
- Rhine in Flammen closes riverside roads and packs the boats; book well ahead or avoid the date.
A calm small town; the real risks are steep, wet Siebengebirge trails, the last tram back to Bonn, and riverside roads closed on Rhine in Flammen night. Standard German precautions apply.
