Komatsu is Ishikawa's second city and the runway town for the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Komatsu Airport (KMQ). The centre is plain, but the edges hold a cave temple, a 500-car museum and a free aviation hall. Most travellers sleep one night near the station or fly out from here.

Get around
The station is the hub: Komatsu Bus and Hokutetsu Kaga Bus cover the airport, Nata-dera and Kaga. Sights outside the centre (Nata-dera, the car museum, Yunokuni no Mori) are 20–40 min by bus or taxi, so plan two or three stops per half day, not a walking loop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Sights are spread out and buses run roughly hourly on some routes: check the last return bus before you leave the station.
- Komatsu Air Base shares the runway with the civil airport; expect jet noise near the airport and the aviation hall.
- Many small restaurants close early and some have no English menu: ask the total before you sit.
- The Hokuriku Shinkansen ended direct trains from Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya: from those cities you change at Tsuruga.
Komatsu is a low-crime city; the real risks are winter snow and ice on pavements, summer heat, and buses that stop running in the early evening. Japan's emergency numbers are 110 (police) and 119 (fire and ambulance).
