Kluang
Give Kluang one night, two if you hike Gunung Lambak: it is a coffee-and-food stop on the Johor rail line, not a sightseeing base.
Kluang is an inland Johor town of about 110 km north of Johor Bahru, founded in 1915 as the administrative centre for central Johor and built on rubber, oil palm and, later, tiles and ceramics. It has no coast and no airport; the railway station has been in service since 1915 and still cuts the town in two. Travellers come for the 1930s railway coffee shop, the street food, the Monday flea market and the two-hour climb up Gunung Lambak. Sights are few and spread out, so most trips use it as a single night between Johor Bahru and Mersing or Batu Pahat.
