Klausen
Chiusa
Klausen is a half-day stop between Bolzano and Brixen: walk the old town and climb to Säben Monastery, then move on. One night only if you want a quiet base for the Eisack Valley.
Klausen (Chiusa) is a small medieval town on the Eisack river, listed among Italy's most beautiful towns. Its main draw is the hilltop Säben Monastery, reached by an old Via Crucis path. The compact historic centre has two squares, a brewery and a castle you can only see from outside. Most travellers use it as a short break on the Bolzano–Brixen train line.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Schloss Branzoll is private: view from outside only.
- Säben Monastery path is steep and can be icy in winter: wear sturdy shoes.
- Many restaurants close on Tuesdays and in the low season (Nov–Feb).
- Train platform at Klausen station is low: step up into the train.
Klausen is very safe. The main risks are uneven cobblestones and the steep monastery path. Watch for bicycles in the narrow streets.
