Sleep in Kuala Lumpur; do Batu Caves as a morning trip by train, Putrajaya as an easy half-day, and Melaka only with a full day and an early start.
Rules in force · 3
- Malaysia ↗Most foreign visitors must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online shortly before arrival; use only the official immigration site.
- Malaysia ↗Remove shoes before entering mosques, temples and homes; cover shoulders and knees, and use the robes on loan at major mosques.
- Malaysia ↗Cards and e-wallets are common in cities; keep some ringgit in small notes for hawker stalls, taxis and tolls.
The Klang Valley is one city and a ring of easy excursions. Kuala Lumpur has a rail network, so the trips that work are the ones the train reaches; the ones that fail are day trips by road in the evening rush. Keep one KL bed, go out with a day pack, and be back before the storm and before the commute.
Where to sleep
Bukit Bintang for first-timers, Chinatown for a cheaper bed near the rail hub.
Limestone caves and a long flight of steps; about 30 minutes by commuter train.
Planned government city with lakes and bridges; about 30–45 minutes by rail.
Heritage port about 2 hours each way by road; better as a night.
