Klaipėda
Give Klaipėda 1 night as a port stop and ferry base for the Curonian Spit; add 2–3 nights on the spit itself in Jun–Aug.
Klaipėda is Lithuania's third-largest city and its only ice-free port, at the mouth of the Danė where the Curonian Lagoon meets the Baltic. The Old Town is a rebuilt grid with a handful of good museums, not a showpiece like Vilnius. Its real job is as a gateway: a five-minute ferry from downtown reaches Smiltynė at the north tip of the Curonian Spit, and buses run the length of the dunes from there. Most travellers sleep one night in town, then move onto the spit or onward to Palanga.

Get around
The city runs north–south, so buses do the work: bus 8 runs every 5–10 min along Taikos prospektas between the station and the south, bus 9 every 10 min nearer the shore past the castle and both ferry terminals. A single paper ticket is €0.80 from a kiosk or €1 from the driver; validate it on boarding. Taxis are cheap — flagfall about €1 then about €0.80/km, so station to Old Town is roughly €3–4. Bikes are the best way to see the spit; rentals sit near the old ferry terminal.

- Entering the Neringa municipality on the spit carries an ecological fee for vehicles; campers pay more in high season.
- Shop alcohol sales stop at 20:00, and 15:00 on Sundays, nationwide.
- Some Old Town venues have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
Klaipėda is a safe, walkable port city. The real issues are unlit spit cycle paths after dark, cold water and currents on Baltic beaches, and late-night bars with no posted prices.
