Klagenfurt is Carinthia's capital and a small city of about 100,000 people, 40 min by train from Villach and close to the Wörthersee. The old town is compact and walkable in half a day; the reason to stay longer is the lake beach on the western edge and the day-trip reach into the Karawanks and Slovenia. Most travellers see it as a stop between Villach and Graz rather than a multi-night base.

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses run from Heiligengeistplatz; a single ride is about €0.90 and a 24-hour ticket about €4. Hire a bike at Neuer Platz and ride the Lendkanal path west to the Strandbad and on along the north shore of the Wörthersee.
