Kitakyushu
北九州市
Base in Kokura for 1–2 nights: castle, Moji Retro and the Kanmon tunnel to Honshu are all reachable by JR in under 40 minutes.
Kitakyushu is five former cities merged into one: Kokura for transport, shopping and the castle, Moji for the 1900s port quarter and the walk to Honshu, Yahata for the steel and museum story, Wakamatsu for beaches. It is a working port, not a resort, and most travellers use it as a stop between Fukuoka and Hiroshima or as a bridge to Shimonoseki. One full day covers the highlights; two lets you add Mount Sarakura or Hiraodai.

Get around
JR trains link Kokura, Moji and Yahata and are the easiest way around; the Kagoshima line runs three trains an hour to Mojiko (about 40 min, ¥340 each way, check). Nishitetsu buses cover the rest and take Suica, PASMO and Sugoca smartcards. The Kitakyushu Monorail runs every ten minutes from Kokura station to Kikugaoka but gives no transfer discount. Kokura station, Mojiko and Yahata are walkable on foot.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The city is spread over 486 km²: check the train or bus time before you set out, not after.
- Hiraodai has no direct public transport; the taxi from Nakatani bus terminal runs a few times a day only.
- Jellyfish at Iwaya beach after mid-August.
- The JR Northern Kyushu pass does not cover the Shinkansen between Kokura and Hakata.
Kitakyushu is a safe city by Japanese standards; the real issues are the heat in July–August, the distances between wards, and the late-night walk back from Kokura's bars. Keep to lit streets and use the station taxi rank.
