Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby Lonsdale is a small Cumbria market town of about 2,000 people on the A65 between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Its draw is compact: a medieval bridge over the River Lune, a famous valley view, an old church and a tight grid of 18th-century streets with pubs and food. Without a car you are limited to what buses reach; with one, it is a quiet base for upper Lonsdale, Ingleton and Sedbergh.

Get around
The town itself is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For the Lune valley, Ingleton caves, Sedbergh and the fells you need a car; buses run to Kendal, Lancaster, Settle and Ingleton but are infrequent and stop early.
