Go for one night if you want an onsen town with ryokan and two theme parks; skip if you expect Nikko's shrines — those are 40 min away.
Kinugawa Onsen is a hot-spring resort in Nikko City, about 2 hours from Asakusa by Tobu limited express. It is a base for onsen, the Kinugawa River and two theme parks, not for sightseeing: the town itself is spread out and partly run-down, and Nikko's shrines are a separate trip. One night is enough for most travellers; two if you add Kawaji or Oku-Kinu.

Get around
The town is spread out along the river. Buses are infrequent and taxis are expensive; some ryokan run shuttles from Kinugawa Onsen station. Check whether your lodgings are nearer Kinugawa Onsen or Kinugawa Kōen station. A rental car helps for Kawaji and the Nichien Momiji Line.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are infrequent and stop early; check the last service before an evening out.
- Several large hotels stand abandoned; the area around them is not lit at night.
- Edo Wonderland closes on some weekdays and has shorter winter hours: check before you go.
- Many small inns and restaurants take cash only.
Very safe. The real risks are winter ice on the river paths, unlit abandoned hotel grounds, and missing the last bus back to a valley inn.
