Give Kinsale two nights, not a day trip: the town is walkable in half a day, but Charles Fort, the harbour walk and dinner need a full one.
Kinsale is a small harbour town 25 km south of Cork, at the mouth of the River Bandon, with a preserved tangle of narrow streets and more good restaurants than a town of about 5,000 people should have. It is a two-night stop: one afternoon for the town and one full day for Charles Fort, the Scilly walk and a long dinner. Come April to October; the food festival is in early October.

Scams and watch-outs
- Desmond Castle has been closed for renovation for years: check before you plan around it.
- Restaurants are small and book out on weekends and in summer: reserve dinner a day or two ahead.
- The Old Head of Kinsale headland is private (golf links); public access is limited to a couple of open days a year.
- Garretstown and Garrylucas beaches are exposed and can be too rough for swimming.
- Mobile signal is patchy on some networks outside the centre.
Kinsale is a low-risk town: the real issues are uneven pavements after rain, dark unlit stretches on the Scilly walk at night, and rip currents at exposed west Cork beaches. Emergency number is 112 or 999.
