Kinross
Give Kinross one night, or a half-day stop on the M90: the reason to come is the 10-min boat to Loch Leven Castle, Apr–Oct only.
Kinross is a small market town on Loch Leven, 13 miles south of Perth and about 50 min by bus from Edinburgh. The one thing worth planning around is the ferry to the island castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held in 1567–68; that runs Apr–Oct only. Everything else — the loch trail, the RSPB hides, the Lomond Hills scarp — is walking, cycling or driving country. Base here for a quiet night, not for a city break.

Get around
The Park & Ride, town centre and the castle pier are within about a mile of each other — walkable. To circle the loch, reach the RSPB reserve, Scotlandwell or the Bishop, you need a car, a bike or a taxi; local buses run along the main road but not round the water.
