Kingussie
Ceann a' Ghiuthsaich
Give Kingussie one night, two if you walk or play shinty: it is a Spey valley rail stop with a barracks ruin, not a sightseeing town.
Kingussie is a small Highland town on the A9 and the Highland main line, 249 m up at the head of the pine forest that gives it its name. Trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow take about 2 h 30 min; Inverness is an hour north. Most travellers use it as a quiet base for the Cairngorms, Ruthven Barracks and the Highland Folk Museum in neighbouring Newtonmore, two miles upstream. A car or bike opens the surrounding strath; on foot you cover the town and the barracks in an afternoon.
