Kingsville
Kingsville, Ontario
Base here 1–2 nights for Point Pelee, wineries and the bird sanctuary; a car is required, and most sights sit 10–20 min apart.
Kingsville is a small Lake Erie town of about 22,000 people in Essex County, 40 km southeast of Windsor along Highway 3. It works as a quiet, cheaper base for Point Pelee National Park, the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary, Colasanti's Tropical Gardens and a cluster of wineries. Without a car you cannot reach the sights, and the bus link to Windsor and Leamington has ended, so plan around driving.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transit to Windsor or Leamington: check current bus service before relying on it.
- Many attractions are seasonal: the heritage village runs May–Oct, the Jack Miner museum mid-May to early Sep, and Point Pelee's visitor centre mid-Apr to late Oct.
- Restaurant kitchens close early by city standards; several stop serving by 20:00–21:00.
- If you cross to Detroit or Sandusky, carry your passport and check current border and ferry rules.
- Summer weekends around Point Pelee fill parking: arrive before 10:00.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are driving County Roads after dark (deer), winter ice, and long unlit stretches between sights. 911 covers everything.
