Kingston airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Kingston sits at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu, on the road between Queenstown and Te Anau. It is a small settlement, not a city, and it has no airport of its own. Almost every visitor arrives through Queenstown Airport, then covers the last 45 km by road.

There is no scheduled bus and no passenger train. That leaves three realistic choices: a rental car, a pre-booked shuttle or taxi, or a seat in someone else's vehicle. Prices below are 2026 estimates and worth confirming when you book.

From the airport, follow State Highway 6 south through Frankton and past Queenstown, then take State Highway 6 toward Kingston. The road hugs the lake for much of the run, and the drive is straightforward in good weather. Allow 40–50 minutes without stops; add time in summer traffic or if you pause at the lookout above the lake.

Fuel up before you leave Queenstown. Kingston has very limited services, and the next reliable fuel is in Lumsden or Te Anau depending on your direction. In winter, carry chains if you are heading further south toward the Milford road, and check conditions before setting out.

If you are driving on to Milford Sound, Kingston is a sensible overnight stop rather than a day trip from Queenstown. Distances in this part of the South Island are longer than they look on the map.

Taxis and pre-booked shuttles meet arrivals at Queenstown Airport. A taxi for the full run to Kingston is the fastest door-to-door option but the most expensive; expect NZ$120–200 for the car, not per person (2026 estimate, check). Shuttles cost less per seat but may wait for other passengers and can take an hour.

Book ahead in summer and around public holidays. Late-night arrivals are harder: some shuttle operators stop running in the evening, and a taxi may be the only option. Confirm the fare before you get in, and ask whether luggage and extra passengers change the price.

Rideshare coverage around Queenstown is limited and unreliable for a 45 km run to Kingston. Treat it as a backup, not a plan.

The cheapest way to reach Kingston is usually a rental car shared between travellers, especially if you are continuing south anyway. A taxi is the simplest but costs more than a night's accommodation in some Kingston stays. Shuttles sit in between.
