Kingston, New York
Kingston
Give Kingston 2 nights, not 1: Uptown and the Rondout waterfront are 2 miles apart, and many museums and restaurants shut Monday and Tuesday.
Kingston is the old capital of New York State, 91 miles up the Hudson from New York City, and it is really two towns: the Stockade (Uptown) with its stone houses and 17th-century church, and the Rondout waterfront (Downtown) with the maritime museum and the creek. They sit about 2 miles apart, so you walk or take a short ride between them. Come for 18th- and 19th-century streets, a heritage railroad and river cruises, and plan around Monday closures.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Museums, many restaurants and shops close Monday and Tuesday, some also Wednesday; some kitchens stop by 20:00 or serve lunch only.
- Old stone and brick sidewalks are uneven: watch for holes and loose slabs.
- The Uptown–Downtown walk is about 2 miles with a climb; not a night walk.
- Buses stop running in the evening — check the last departure before you rely on one.
Kingston is a small city with normal US precautions: the real hazards are uneven historic sidewalks, ice in winter and the unlit 2-mile walk between Uptown and Downtown after dark.
