Kingsport is a small city in eastern Tennessee, population about 48,000, built on the Holston River where the boatyard and the Netherland Inn once served the Wilderness Trail. It is not a headline destination: the reasons to stop are Bays Mountain Park, the Greenbelt path along the river, a compact downtown with free parking, and its position on I-81 and I-26 between Knoxville, Johnson City and Asheville. Two nights covers it comfortably; one night is enough if you are passing through.

Get around
A car is the practical default: traffic is light, downtown parking is plentiful and usually free, and I-81 and I-26 meet here. Kingsport Area Transit System (KATS) runs six hourly routes covering downtown, employers and shopping areas — check current timetables before relying on it. The Greenbelt multi-use path links several parts of the city on foot or by bike; ride on roads with care, as drivers here are not used to cyclists.
