Kingaroy
Give Kingaroy one night, or two if you want the South Burnett wineries and the Bunya Mountains: it is a 2.5 h drive from Brisbane, not a rail stop.
Kingaroy is the largest town in the South Burnett and calls itself the peanut capital of Australia. The draw is the peanut silos on Haly Street, a small heritage museum, red-soil farmland and a ring of vineyards. It works as a self-drive overnight between Brisbane and the Bunya Mountains, not as a long stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and mobile coverage drops on back roads: carry water and download offline maps.
- Kangaroos and wallabies on the road at dawn and dusk.
- Summer heat and afternoon storms: plan outdoor stops before midday.
- Many cellar doors open only on weekends or by appointment: check ahead.
Safe for tourists; the real risks are long drives, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and summer heat. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
