King
King Township
Use King as a car-based day out from Vaughan or Newmarket, not a base: no walkable town core, thin transit, lodging availability needs checking before you commit.
King is a rural township of about 24,500 people in York Region, north of Toronto, made up of King City, Nobleton and Schomberg plus farmland on the Oak Ridges Moraine. There is no dense town centre to walk and little transit, so it works best as a short drive out of the city rather than a place to sleep. Come for the museum grounds, a conservation-area hike or a lake watersports session, then leave.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: arterial roads run on a 2 km (1.2 mi) grid, parking is free and easy, and Highway 400 cuts through the township. York Region Transit and GO buses cover little of the rural area, and one route runs as dial-a-ride off-peak, which you must book about 3 hours ahead. Taxis are not hailable from the street; pre-book by phone or app. Cycling is legal on sidewalks and some roads have bike lanes.A car is the practical answer: arterial roads run on a 1.2 mi (2 km) grid, parking is free and easy, and Highway 400 cuts through the township. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No hospital in the township: the nearest are in neighbouring municipalities.
- No police station in King, only a substation; York Regional Police District 1 is in Newmarket.
- Drivers turning right often do not look for pedestrians or cyclists.
- Stay off creek and river banks during and after heavy rain or snowmelt; banks can collapse.
- Avoid driving during and right after a winter storm, especially if you are not used to snow and ice.
- Local dialling needs all 10 digits, including the area code.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving, winter storms, creek banks after rain, and right-turning cars that do not expect pedestrians.
