Voykit pocket guide · United States
King City
Stop for one night on the US 101 drive, or skip: the town is a pit stop, not a base. Two hours covers the museum and Broadway.
King City sits on US 101 between Salinas (48 mi north) and Paso Robles (84 mi south), one of the few service towns on that stretch. Travellers use it for a bed, fuel and a Mexican meal; the agricultural museum and the May fair are the only reasons to plan a stop. Everything worth seeing is on or just off Broadway, a few blocks east of the freeway.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the town spreads along Broadway and Canal Street, and the freeway is the main road. Walking works for the Broadway strip only. Monterey-Salinas Transit runs intercity buses to Salinas and south to Paso Robles; Greyhound and American Star Tours stop in town on the San Francisco–Los Angeles route.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 32 °C; carry water.
- Most rooms sit at the freeway ramps: ask for a room away from US 101 if noise matters.
- Restaurants and the museum keep short hours, and some close one weekday: check before you arrive.
- Fuel and food gaps on US 101 south of town: fill up here.
A small farm town on a highway: the main risks are summer heat, long empty stretches of US 101 and driving tired after a long day. Parked-car break-ins happen at freeway motels, so leave nothing visible.
