Kinderdijk is a village in the Alblasserwaard polder where 19 windmills built around 1740 drained the low land; the network has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The landscape itself is free to walk or cycle, and most visitors see it in two to four hours. Sleep in Rotterdam or Dordrecht and come out for the morning, or stay nearby if you want the mills at sunrise and sunset.
