Kilmarnock
Cill Mheàrnaig
Skip as a base: one night at an edge-of-town hotel if you're breaking a journey, or a half-day for Dean Castle and the Burns links.
Kilmarnock is an industrial commuter town in East Ayrshire, 23 miles southwest of Glasgow by motorway and 50 minutes by train. Its old trades — carpets, tractors, Johnnie Walker blending — have gone, and the centre is mostly business and family visits. What it does have is Dean Castle, a Burns publishing history and cheap beds on the Glasgow–Ayr corridor. Treat it as a stop, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Last train from Glasgow Central is shortly after 23:00; the last X76 bus leaves Glasgow around 21:30.
- Some pubs and bars have mixed records on service and quality; check recent reviews before committing to a meal.
- Rugby Park access is fenced off from Rugby Road on match days — approach from Dundonald Road.
- Many town-centre sights are free but have short daytime hours; check before travelling.
A low-risk town by UK standards; the usual night-out cautions apply around the town-centre pubs. Weather, not crime, is the main planning risk — bring a waterproof.
