Give Killarney 2–3 nights: one full day for the national park and Muckross, one for the Ring of Kerry or the Gap of Dunloe. Skip it as a day trip from Cork.

Killarney is a small town (about 14,000 residents) sitting on three lakes under Ireland's highest mountains, and the whole area is protected as Killarney National Park. It has been on the tourist circuit since the railway arrived in 1853, and in summer visitors outnumber locals. It is the standard start and finish point for the 214-km Ring of Kerry. Two nights covers the park properly; three lets you add the Ring or the Gap of Dunloe without rushing.

Get around

The town centre is compact and walkable, but the national park is 2–5 km out: use a bike, the O'Callaghan KY01 town bus, or a car. Bike hire has several town locations. Jaunting cars (horse-drawn, four seats, driver called a jarvey) run to Ross Castle and Muckross and up the Gap of Dunloe lane. Taxis wait at the railway station and along College St.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
  • Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
  • Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
  • Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
  • Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos

Scams and watch-outs

  • The Gap of Dunloe lane is a public road but very narrow: cars meet bikes, pony carts and other cars. Most people go up by jaunting car and back by boat.
  • Carrauntoohil (1,038 m) is a 5–6 h strenuous hike and dangerous in poor weather; go with a guide or not at all if the cloud is down.
  • Ring of Kerry coach tours leave Killarney anti-clockwise. If you drive yourself from Killarney, go clockwise to stay ahead of the coaches.
  • Summer weekends: book beds and dinner tables ahead, and expect slow traffic on the N71 and N72.
  • Local Link rural buses run about once a week per village, for shopping trips — they are no use for sightseeing.

Very safe for a tourist town of its size; the real risks are mountain weather, narrow roads and the lake shore after dark. 112 or 999 reaches all services.
