Killaloe
Killaloe, Ontario
Skip as a destination, go as a supply stop: one hour in town, then Golden Lake (3 km east) or Algonquin Park. No car, no trip.
Killaloe is a small Ottawa Valley town on Highway 60, about 3 km west of Golden Lake and roughly 40 km from the Algonquin Provincial Park east gate. There is little to see in the town itself; its job is groceries, gas and a bed before the park or the lake. Plan one hour in town, or one night if you are fishing or paddling Golden Lake.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No car means no trip: outlying lake and park access is drive-only.
- Fuel and grocery hours are limited; fill up and stock up before heading to the park.
- Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 60 toward Algonquin.
- Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, especially deer and moose.
- Blackflies and mosquitoes peak late May to June: bring repellent.
Very low crime; the real risks are driving Highway 60 at dawn and dusk, patchy cell coverage, and cold water on Golden Lake. Tell someone your route before heading into the park.
