Kilkivan
Give Kilkivan one night only if you are fossicking at the Prophet Gold Mine; otherwise pass through on the Gympie–Kingaroy road in under an hour.
Kilkivan is a former gold town of about 700 people on the Wide Bay Highway, roughly 50 km west of Gympie and 218 km from Brisbane. There is no public transport and mobile coverage is patchy, so you need a car. The one paid attraction is the Prophet Gold Mine, where you can fossick for gold; the rest of the appeal is the pub, the bush camping and the quiet. Treat it as a half-day stop or a single overnight on the way to or from the South Burnett.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are stuck.
- Mobile coverage is very limited in and around town.
- Snakes, including taipans and brown snakes, are common in bushland — wear boots and watch where you step.
- Kangaroos and livestock on the road at dawn and dusk.
- The Prophet Gold Mine opens six days a week and closes on Fridays; check before driving out.
Kilkivan is a quiet country town and crime is not the issue. The real risks are snakes in bushland, no mobile signal, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and summer heat.
