Kilinochchi
Skip unless you are a war-history traveller or need a stop between Jaffna and the south: half a day for the war memorial and Pooneryn Fort, then move on.
Kilinochchi is a quiet agricultural town in the Northern Province, 100 km south of Jaffna. It was under LTTE control for most of the civil war and today has a war memorial and the ruins of Pooneryn Fort. Few tourists come; the main reason to stop is to understand the conflict's legacy or to break the bus ride between Jaffna and Colombo.

Get around
Three-wheelers (tuk-tuks) and hired cars are the main options; buses are cheap but infrequent. Ride-share apps (Uber, Pick Me) are available but limited. Walking long distances is not recommended.

- Greeting: 'Ayubowan' (Sinhala) or 'Vanakkam' (Tamil) with palms together; avoid: Kissing on the cheek
