Kilcreggan
Go for one night only if you have a car or use the Gourock ferry; without either, skip it and base in Helensburgh or Dunoon.
Kilcreggan is a small village at the tip of the Rosneath peninsula in Argyll and Bute, cut off by land but 15 minutes by foot ferry from Gourock. It grew as a Clyde steamer stop and summer-home village in the 19th century. There is little to see beyond the shore, painted rocks and a short walk to Portkil Battery, so treat it as a quiet one-night stop or a half-day from Gourock, not a base for a Scottish trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station in the village; the nearest is Garelochhead, with only 3–4 trains a day.
- The Helensburgh–Kilcreggan ferry was axed in 2012; do not plan around it.
- Mobile signal is patchy; O2 has no coverage here.
- Linn Botanic Gardens in Cove is closed except for occasional pre-booked openings.
Very low crime; the real risks are narrow roads with no pavement, fast-changing coastal weather and patchy phone signal. Tell someone your route if you walk the shore or hills.
