Kigali

Kigali is a hill city with one heavy morning and easy evenings: visit the Genocide Memorial early, keep midday for coffee and markets, take a car or moto between hills, and be indoors before the afternoon rain in the wet months.

Kigali is clean, orderly and hilly. Distances look short on a map but the slopes make walking slow, so the four clusters sit on separate hills and a short car or moto ride joins them. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the anchor of a first visit and deserves a quiet half-day. Umuganda, the community-work morning on the last Saturday of each month, changes traffic and opening hours; plan transfers around it.

Kigali International Airport (KGL)
KGL to the hotel: one pre-booked or ride-hailing car, 20–50 minutes; the risk is arriving without a ride arranged or landing on the last-Saturday Umuganda morning.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car (Yego, Bolt) or a moto-taxi between hills.

Passes
No pass. Short rides inside the centre are cheap; agree or see the fare before you ride. Always take the helmet on a moto.
Late at night
No rail. Ride-hailing and taxis run late but thin out after midnight; book the airport ride ahead.

Skewers of grilled goat, beef or fish with fried plantain at a bar-restaurant on the main street: a late-afternoon stop after the walk.

City centre (Nyarugenge)
Close to the market and the Kandt House Museum; quieter after dark, so plan a car for dinner.
Kimihurura
Restaurants and cafés on foot and a short car ride to the memorial: pick a hotel with a 24-hour desk and a car-accessible door.

Language

Almost everyone speaks Kinyarwanda. English replaced French as the language of schooling in 2008, so younger Rwandans use English and older ones French; Swahili is common in trade. Guides and hotel staff speak English well.

  • 'Muraho' (hello), 'murakoze' (thank you), 'amakuru?' (how are you?), 'mwaramutse' (good morning).
  • WhatsApp is standard for guides and drivers.

  • Ethnicity: Talk about 'Rwandans'; avoid: Asking about Hutu or Tutsi
  • Eating: Eat seated at a table; avoid: Eating while walking in the street
  • Public order: Queue, use crossings and bins; avoid: Littering
  • Photos: Ask first; avoid: Photographing officials or memorial remains
  • Emotions: Be calm and reserved; avoid: Loud public anger

Red lines

  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: dress quietly, no photographs in the exhibitions, phones silent.
  • Do not ask people about ethnicity; the subject is taboo and can be illegal as divisionism.
  • Do not photograph police, soldiers or government buildings.

  • Fake permit resellers: Book via Visit Rwanda / RDB or a licensed operator; the permit carries your name and passport number.
  • Unofficial visa sites: Use Irembo or migration.gov.rw; the visa on arrival needs no agent.
  • Moto overcharging: Use the app or agree the fare; drivers generally follow meters now.
  • Street money changers: Use banks and forex bureaux.
