Kiel is Schleswig-Holstein's capital and Germany's main Baltic passenger port, at the mouth of the world's busiest canal. Almost nothing historic survived the 1945 bombing, so the draw is water, ships and the Kieler Woche sailing festival at the end of June, not old-town streets. Most travellers pass through on the way to Scandinavia or use it as a one-night stop between Hamburg and the Danish border.
