Kiawah Island
Go only if you have a car and a booked bed: 2–3 nights on the island, or sleep in Charleston and day-trip in for the beach and bike paths.
Kiawah is a private gated resort island 27 miles (about 40 min) from Charleston, with 10 miles of beach, 30 miles of paved bike paths and five golf courses including the Ocean Course. There is no public street grid to wander: you need a gate pass from a booked villa, hotel or resort, and a car to reach it.

Get around
A car is the practical default: the island is spread out and the gate is 15 miles from US 17. Bicycles work well once you are inside — 30 miles of paved paths plus hard-packed sand at low tide. A resort shuttle runs on the island; check its current route and hours.
