Kiambu is a highland county 14 km north of Nairobi, not a standalone destination. Its draw is cool air, tea and coffee estates, waterfalls and caves, all reachable as day trips. Stay in Nairobi or Ruaka and treat Kiambu as a 1–2 day add-on to a Kenya trip.

Get around
Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt, Little) works in Kiambu Town, Ruaka and Thika but wait times run longer than in Nairobi. Matatus (Route 100 from Nairobi CBD to Kiambu Town, about Ksh 50–100) are cheap and frequent but crowded. Boda-bodas reach estate and waterfall tracks; agree the fare and take the helmet. A hired car is the only practical way to link several rural sights in one day.

Scams and watch-outs
- Kiambu Road from Muthaiga jams hard at rush hour; leave Nairobi before 07:00 or after 09:30.
- Small access roads to waterfalls and farms turn to mud after heavy rain; a 4x4 is rarely needed but check conditions.
- Carry small cash (Ksh 50, 100, 200) or set up M-Pesa; many local stalls and matatus do not take cards.
- Walking along the main highways is unsafe — no sidewalks and fast traffic.
- Fourteen Falls has had upstream pollution problems; check current conditions before paying the entry fee.
Kiambu is generally safe by day in towns and on estates; the real risks are highway traffic, unlit rural roads after dark and valuables on show at crowded matatu stages in Nairobi before you board.
