Khumjung
Half-day stop from Namche Bazaar: see the yeti scalp at the monastery, then walk back. Not a base.
Khumjung (3,790 m) sits an hour's walk above Namche Bazaar. The main draw is the Khumjung Monastery, which displays a scalp said to be from a yeti, and the nearby sacred cave of Guru Rinpoche. Most trekkers visit as a half-day side trip from Namche, though a few lodges exist for those who want to stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste with palms together; a handshake between men in business; avoid: Hugging or kissing in public
- Temples and stupas: Walk clockwise, spin prayer wheels clockwise, shoes off at shrines; avoid: Touching offerings; entering Hindu-only areas
- Food: Right hand, accept refills gracefully; avoid: Sharing food you have bitten; stepping over food
- Feet and heads: Keep feet flat and away from people and altars; avoid: Touching anyone's head
- Photos: Ask first; offer to show the picture; avoid: Photographing cremations or rituals without permission
- On the trail: Pass mani walls and chortens on the left (keeping them on your right); give way to yaks on the mountain side; avoid: Standing on the drop side when animals pass
Scams and watch-outs
- The climb from Namche is steep; carry water and pace yourself.
- The yeti scalp is a small exhibit inside the monastery; ask the monks to see it.
- No ATMs in Khumjung; bring enough NPR from Namche or Lukla.
Altitude is the main risk: Khumjung sits at 3,790 m. Ascend slowly, drink water, and descend if you feel unwell. The trail from Namche is steep and slippery after rain.
