Køge is a small Zealand harbour town 40 minutes by S-train from Copenhagen, with Denmark's largest market square outside the capital, the country's oldest working town hall (1567) and its oldest dated half-timbered house (1527). The old town and the harbour sit a few minutes' walk from the station, so it works as a short stop rather than a base. Most travellers see it in half a day; one night adds the beach, the marina and Vallø.

Get around

Walk: the station, Torvet, the old streets and the harbour are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses cover the beach, the marina and Vallø; a bike is the easiest way to reach Ølsemagle Revle and the coast. Copenhagen is 40 minutes by S-train (E line).

Scams and watch-outs

  • The S-train to Copenhagen runs late but thins out after midnight: check the last departure before a late dinner.
  • Harbour restaurants keep seasonal hours; several close or shorten menus outside summer.
  • Vallø Castle is a foundation property with no access to the manor: you can walk the park only.
  • Køge is on the E20/E47/E55 motorway split; driving here in the afternoon rush adds time.

A calm small town; the real risks are winter ice on the cobbles, bicycles in the pedestrian streets and unlit paths along the beach after dark. Swimming at the beach is unsupervised: check the flags and current.
